A few food gifts when you're in a crunch

Easy and Low Budget Gifts for the Holidays!

Need a quick fix for a last minute gift this season? We made two must-try food gift ideas to save the day. For the cook or the bartender, these gifts will be a hit.

All-Purpose Dry Rub

This sweet, smoky and savory dry rub covers all the bases for beef, pork, chicken, and even fish. Use any air tight container for this 10 minute holiday gift that's sure to please.

1/4 cup kosher salt

1/4 cup ground black pepper

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup chili powder

1/2 cup paprika

3 tablespoons ground cumin

2 tablespoons ground coriander

2 tablespoons garlic powder

1 tablespoon cayenne pepper, more or less to taste

1 tablespoon ground sage

Combine all ingredients into bowl, breaking up clumps of brown sugar and thoroughly mix. Pour into air tight container - rub will keep for a few months out of the light.

DIY Spiced Rum

Gifting storebought booze is overrated. Give the mixologist in your life some personal touch for their bar cart. This rum recipe adds sweet and zesty to regular dark rum.

750ml dark rum (1 regular bottle)

2 cinnamon sticks

2-3 star anise pods

3 cloves

2 allspice berries

1/2 vanilla bean, or 1 tsp vanilla extract

1 large orange peel strip

Combine all ingredients into existing rum bottle, or another 750ml bottle (we removed the label to give a more homemade feel). Let sit for 2 days, shaking once after the first day. Strain through fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into clean bottle and discard spices. Seal tightly and store in dark, dry place.
